Week 4 — Tjukurpa palya mulamula nintiringkunytjaku / Critical thinking and fact-checking
Pitj: AI watjala tjukurpa kuṉpu — palunya kuṟu (lie). AI palyani fake court case, fake quote, fake science citation. Strong voice wiya mulamula correct. Defence-pa: tool wiya — habit pulka. SIFT — four step: Stop, Investigate source, Find better story, Trace claim back to original.
Eng: AI confidently produces false information — fake legal cases, invented historical quotes, made-up scientific citations. Confidence is not accuracy. The best defence is not a tool — it’s a habit. The SIFT method: Stop, Investigate the source, Find better coverage, Trace claims back to original context.
Discussion
- Iriti online — believed something wrong. Nyaa believable? Nyaa would have caught it?
- AI invent fact — confidence pulka — nyaa? (Hint: Week 1.)
- TikTok, AI summary, news article — same — three source palya? Or one source palya?
- “Wiya kulini” (I don’t know) — “Looked it up, wiya mulamula” (looked it up, not true) — tjukurpa kutjara mulapa?
Activity / Palyani: “Catch the AI lying”
Together design five questions where the correct answer is something you each know well — a family member’s job, the plot of a favourite book, a local sports result, a niche hobby fact, a historical event from your country/community. Ask the AI each question and rate: - Correct - Partly correct (with mistakes) - Confidently wrong - Refused / hedged
For each “confidently wrong” one, run it through SIFT together. Discuss: would you have caught this if you didn’t already know?
