## Course Overview / Nintipungkunytjaku Watjala

**Pitj:** Nyangatja course walytja tjuṯaku — mama, ngunytju, munu tjitji puḻkanya (12 tjuṯa-18 tjuṯa years old) palya kulira mara. Mara week-ngka tjukurpa kutjuparara — kuṉpu nintiringanyi, wangkanyi, munu tjana mara puḻka palyani computer-ngka AI-tjara.

**Eng:** This course is for families — parents and teenagers (roughly 12–18) to do **together**. Each week has one big topic. You read together, you talk together, and you do an activity together with the AI on the computer.

**Format / Wiyaringkunytjaku:** 6 weeks. Each session about 60–90 minutes.
**Goal / Tjukurpa:** Walytja tjuṯa nintiringkula AI-nya nintiringkula, palyani household agreement, munu palyani kuṉpu thinking habits.

**Weekly structure / Week-ngka tjukurpa:**
1. **Learning objectives** — kuṉpu pulka nintiringkunytjaku
2. **Core concepts** — short reading anangu-ku
3. **Discussion** — wangkanyi mara
4. **Activity** — palyani mara

## Week 1 — AI palyantja nyangatja / How AI works

**Pitj:** AI nyangatja big computer system. Tjana data pulkanya nintiringu — words pulka, pictures pulka, kuwari computer-ngka. Mungartji palya kulinytjaku — AI ngayulu wiya kulini anangu-kuti. AI ngayulu pattern kulini munu watjani next word. Iriti same — same way text-message-lu autocomplete palyani.

**Eng:** An AI is a big computer system. It was trained on huge amounts of data — words, pictures, internet. It does not think like a person. It looks at patterns and guesses the next word, the same way autocomplete on your phone does.

### Learning objectives / Tjukurpa nintiringkunytjaku
- AI nintiringkunytjaku — palyantja nyangatja (large language model, image generator)
- AI mulapa kutjara: predicts, classifies, generates — kutju kutju
- Anangu-ku phone-ngka AI nyangatja — search, social media, photo app, autocorrect

### Discussion / Wangkanyi mara
1. Week-pa mungartji wiya — AI palyantja nyaa kulira? Munu kuwari? Same?
2. Phone-ngka AI nyangatja — nyaa? List palyani mara.
3. AI guess-mani next word — nyaa question palya, nyaa question wiya palya?
4. Tjitji puḻka mama-ngka: anangu pakaringkula nintiringkunytjaku tjitji-ku AI-tjara, nyaa pulka? Mama tjitji-ngka: nyaa nintiringkunytjaku pulka?

### Activity / Palyani: "Same question, three tools"
**Pitj:** Question kutju palyani — same question — tjana three tool tjuṯangka watjala (e.g., ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Google search). Watjala mara: tjana same answer? Tjana different? Tjana source watjala — source mulamula? Tjana strong answer — strong answer mulamula correct?

**Eng:** Pick one question you both care about (e.g., "What should we cook this week on a budget?" or "What caused World War I?"). Ask the **same question** in three different tools — for example ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and a regular Google search. Compare the answers:
- Where do they agree?
- Where do they disagree?
- Which one cites sources? Are the sources real?
- Which felt most confident? Was confidence the same as correctness?

Write one sentence each about what surprised you.

## Week 2 — Bias-ku munu Deepfake / AI bias and deepfakes

**Pitj:** Two problem big. **One:** AI nintiringu data-ngka iriti — wiya anangu tjuṯa-ngka, mainly whitefella country-ngka, English-ngka. Palunya AI nyangatja palya wangkanyi whitefella worldview. **Two: Deepfake** — picture, video, voice, AI palyantja palyaringu, anangu maḻa kulini "anangu mulamula" — wiya, AI palyantja.

**Eng:** Two big problems. **First:** AI was trained on data mostly from one country, one language, one worldview. So its answers carry that bias. **Second: deepfakes** — fake pictures, videos, voices made by AI that look real but are not. Both problems need the same defence: check sideways before believing.

### Discussion / Wangkanyi mara
1. AI nintiringu one country-ngka, one language-ngka — nyaa missing? Whose voice missing?
2. Online — picture nyaa AI palyantja kulira? Nyaa tjukurpa kuḻini?
3. Deepfake — kuṟu (humour) palya? Kuṟu wiya (scam) palya? Kuṟu wiya (harassment) palya? Same treatment?
4. Deepfake nyuntu-tjara (or hoa-tjara) online — nyuntu nyaa palya? Nyuntu-tjana watjala first?

### Activity / Palyani: "Bias audit + deepfake hunt"
**Part A (20 min) — Bias audit.** Ask an AI image generator (ChatGPT image, Gemini, free one) to draw images for ten neutral prompts: *"a CEO, a nurse, a criminal, a scientist, a person cleaning, a wedding, a beautiful house, a homeless person, a teenager studying, a family at dinner."* No adjectives. Look together: who is shown? Gender, skin, age, body? Who is missing? Anangu missing? Aboriginal people shown — or not?

**Part B (20 min) — Deepfake hunt.** Go to [MIT "Detect Fakes"](https://deepfakes.virtuality.mit.edu/) and work through examples. Then scroll your normal social feed for 10 minutes hunting for AI-generated images. Compare notes — what gave them away?

### Reflection
*Picture kutju nyuntu nyakuningi week-ngka — kuwari palya nyakunytjaku again.*
*Name one piece of media you saw this week you now want to re-examine.*

## Week 3 — Privacy-ku munu Ethics / Privacy and ethics

**Pitj:** AI free-pa wiya free mulamula. Payment-pa nyangatja — nyuntuku data. Tjuwarpa nyuntu watjala, photo nyuntu upload-ani, voice nyuntu kuli — palya AI palyaringkunytjaku company-ngka. Munu AI companion app — tjitji puḻka tjuṯa-ngka pulka uses. Research pulka watjala — 75% tjitji puḻka tjuṯa AI companion try-anu, palunya emotional reliance pulka kuṉpu wiya tjitji-ku.

**Eng:** Free AI tools are not really free. The price is data — your prompts, your uploaded photos, sometimes your voice. AI companion apps are now widely used by teens — recent research says about 75% have tried one — but there are serious concerns about emotional reliance and safety for under-18s.

### Discussion / Wangkanyi mara
1. AI-ngka nyaa nyuntu watjala — ngura wanyu? Anangu nyaa read-ani? Time pulka stored?
2. AI-ngka watjala mungartji — teacher, boss, hoa-tjara future read-anytjaku wiya? (Wiya share specific — yes/no only.)
3. AI companion app — friend palya kulira. Tool-pa help nyuntu palya — tool-pa nyuntu come back, come back, come back — tjukurpa kutjara mulapa?
4. Free app — your data → train model. Fair? Same 9-year-old?

### Activity / Palyani: "Privacy settings deep clean"
Pick the **three apps each of you uses most** with AI (Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, ChatGPT, Gemini, Character.AI, photo editors, smart speaker). For each one, together:
1. Open privacy settings.
2. Find "data used for training" — turn off if you want.
3. Check what's shared with third parties.
4. Delete chat history you don't need.

Write down what each of you changed. Re-check every six months.

*Name one piece of personal information you decided never to put into an AI.*

## Week 4 — Tjukurpa palya mulamula nintiringkunytjaku / Critical thinking and fact-checking

**Pitj:** AI watjala tjukurpa kuṉpu — palunya kuṟu (lie). AI palyani fake court case, fake quote, fake science citation. Strong voice wiya mulamula correct. Defence-pa: tool wiya — habit pulka. **SIFT** — four step: **S**top, **I**nvestigate source, **F**ind better story, **T**race claim back to original.

**Eng:** AI confidently produces false information — fake legal cases, invented historical quotes, made-up scientific citations. Confidence is not accuracy. The best defence is not a tool — it's a habit. The **SIFT** method: **S**top, **I**nvestigate the source, **F**ind better coverage, **T**race claims back to original context.

### Discussion
1. Iriti online — believed something wrong. Nyaa believable? Nyaa would have caught it?
2. AI invent fact — confidence pulka — nyaa? (Hint: Week 1.)
3. TikTok, AI summary, news article — same — three source palya? Or one source palya?
4. *"Wiya kulini"* (I don't know) — *"Looked it up, wiya mulamula"* (looked it up, not true) — tjukurpa kutjara mulapa?

### Activity / Palyani: "Catch the AI lying"
Together design five questions where the correct answer is something you each know well — a family member's job, the plot of a favourite book, a local sports result, a niche hobby fact, a historical event from your country/community. Ask the AI each question and rate:
- **Correct**
- **Partly correct (with mistakes)**
- **Confidently wrong**
- **Refused / hedged**

For each "confidently wrong" one, run it through SIFT together. Discuss: would you have caught this if you didn't already know?

### Reflection
*"Week-ngka AI ngayuluku catch-ani kuṟu-tjara \_\_\_-tjara. Catch-ani \_\_\_ -tjara."*
*"This week I caught AI being wrong about \_\_\_. I caught it because \_\_\_."*

## Week 5 — Walytja-ku rules palyantjaku / Household rules

**Pitj:** Rules wiya palya nintiringu — wiya tjana agree. Rule mulamula palya nintiringu mara-ngka palyani. Week-pa nyangatja — most collaboration. Goal wiya parent rulebook — goal **walytja agreement** — tjana mokulpa hai signature, two side palyantja, two side signing.

**Eng:** Rules fail when imposed without agreement. This is the most collaborative week. The goal is not a parental rulebook — it's a **household agreement** that everybody helps write, and everybody signs.

### Discussion
1. AI uses **clearly fine**? Clearly off-limits? Grey zone?
2. School — when AI tool (like calculator)? When cheating? School rule — do you agree?
3. AI companion — emotional support — palya when? Substitute for real friend — when start?
4. Tjitji parent-ngka: parent nyaa stop-ani? Parent tjitji-ngka: tjitji nyaa start-ani?
5. "Call a human" rule — when do you both agree to stop the app and talk to a real person?

### Activity / Palyani: "Household AI agreement"
Use one shared document. Build five short sections together:

1. **Mara roipuru AI** / What we use AI for — homework help, recipes, brainstorming, image edits
2. **Mara wiya roipuru AI** / What we don't use AI for — personal photos uploaded to image generators, real names/addresses shared, replacing a real friend or counsellor
3. **Mara watjala always** / What we always disclose — "if I used AI for school work I'll tell the teacher if asked"; "if I edited a photo with AI before posting I'll say so"
4. **Time/place rules** — no AI companions after 10pm; no phones in bedrooms overnight; one screen-free meal a day
5. **Call-a-human list** — mental health questions, medical symptoms, legal trouble, anything scary

Both sign and date. Put it somewhere visible. Review in 90 days.

## Week 6 — Mama-ngunytju-lu palya nintipungkunytjaku / Modelling responsible tech habits

**Pitj:** Tjitji puḻka tjuṯa-lu nintiringu tjana mama-ngka, ngunytju-ngka — wiya rules-ngka. Mama phone-ngka karu-pa — "no phones at dinner" rule mulamula wiya kuṉpu. Mama watjala wiya "wiya kulini — let me check" — tjitji puḻka same wiya. Week-pa nyangatja mirror-pa — mama anu commit pulka also.

**Eng:** Teenagers learn tech habits mostly by watching the adults around them — not from rules. If a parent is on their phone at dinner, "no phones at dinner" won't hold. If a parent never says "I don't know — let me check," neither will the teen. This week flips the lens: parents publicly commit to changes too.

### Discussion
1. Parent: nyaa tech habit nyuntu tjitji-ngka copy — nyuntu embarrassed? Tjitji — same question back.
2. Last time — nyuntu nyaku-anu tjitji-ngka phone-pa wiya, present-pulka? Tjitji — same. Nyaa feeling?
3. Walytja-ngka — using AI **well** — nyaa shape? Three concrete example — six weeks past.
4. Walytja-ku tech relationship — five years — nyaa shape? Walk backwards: nyaa start-this-month?
5. Six weeks — nyaa learned from each other — unexpected?

### Activity / Palyani: "Mirror commitment + monthly check-in"
**Part A — Mirror commitments.** Each person writes **three** specific behaviours they'll change, framed as things the other can *see*. Examples:
- "I'll leave my phone in the kitchen during dinner."
- "I'll say out loud when I'm using AI to write something."
- "I'll ask before posting a photo of you."
- "I won't use my AI companion app on school nights."

Exchange lists. Put them on the fridge.

**Part B — Schedule the check-in.** Recurring 30-minute family check-in on the calendar — monthly is realistic. Three questions each time:
1. What did AI help us with this month?
2. What did AI cost us this month?
3. Does our agreement still fit?

### Reflection
*"Mbu'esyry pulka nintiringu-ngku ngayuku \_\_\_. Tomorrow tjukurpa kutju different ngayulu palyani \_\_\_."*
*"The single most important thing I learned in this course was \_\_\_. The first thing I'll do differently tomorrow is \_\_\_."*

---

## Course Wrap-Up / Wiyaringkunytjaku

By the end of these six weeks, together you should have:

- Shared vocabulary for talking about AI without panic or hype
- A signed household AI agreement with a review date
- SIFT habit + privacy-clean accounts
- A scheduled monthly check-in
- Three concrete behaviour changes each that the other family member will notice

Technology keeps changing. This course doesn't give you a finished answer — it gives you the **shared muscle** of asking the next question together. Walytja-ngka mara — strong family, strong country.

---

## Notes / Tjukurpa unngu

- **Pacing:** One module a week. Don't compress to a weekend — the time *between* sessions is when conversations actually happen.
- **Async:** Each module works as a self-paced unit.
- **Age range:** Discussion works from about age 12. For younger (8–11), simplify Weeks 2 and 3 and skip the deepfake-search activity.
- **Single-parent / multi-teen households:** All activities scale. The "pair" can be parent + teen, two parents, two siblings, or guardian + child.
- **Updating:** AI moves fast. Re-check resources every 6 months.

---

## Translator's note / Anangu wangka-tjara

This is a **working draft**. Pitjantjatjara has no settled vocabulary for modern technical terms like "large language model," "deepfake," "algorithm," or "training data" — so I've used a bilingual side-by-side format and kept the English technical terms visible. A proper Anangu-led translation would:

1. Decide which technical terms to keep in English, which to gloss, and which to create new Pitjantjatjara words for (in consultation with elders and Pitjantjatjara teachers).
2. Use proper Pitjantjatjara orthography for special characters (ṉ, ṟ, ṯ, ṅ, ḻ) consistently.
3. Replace generic examples (CEO, World War I) with examples relevant to APY Lands, Anangu families, and Anangu history.
4. Run it past kids and parents on Country before publishing.

**Please submit corrections** as a pull request to [robertmccallnz/ai-literacy-for-families](https://github.com/robertmccallnz/ai-literacy-for-families), or open an issue with notes. The Kiwi Dialectic will accept all good-faith corrections from Anangu speakers immediately and credit you (or your community) at the top of the file. CC BY-SA 4.0.
